Fire-Rated Access Panels – Ensuring Integrity of Fire Barriers

Fire-Rated Access Panels – Ensuring Integrity of Fire Barriers | Ceasefire Passive Fire Protection

Access panels are essential for reaching concealed plumbing, electrical and HVAC services. However, when installed in fire-rated walls or ceilings, they must be designed and installed so the Fire Resistance Level (FRL) of the barrier is not compromised.

Why They Matter

Every opening in a fire barrier represents a potential weak point. If a standard (non-rated) panel is installed, fire and smoke can spread rapidly between compartments. Fire-rated access panels are tested to AS 1530.4 to resist fire spread for a specified duration.

What Makes Them Compliant

Fire-rated panels typically feature:

  • Non-combustible construction (e.g. steel with fire-resistant core)
  • Intumescent seals that expand under heat
  • Tested assemblies (panel, frame and hinges together)

The resulting FRL is expressed as –/60/60, –/90/90, etc., depending on the required performance.

Installation Requirements (AS 4072.1)

To maintain compliance, installation must follow the tested configuration exactly, including:

  • Approved fixing methods and fasteners
  • Correct sealant type and application
  • Panel orientation and maximum size
  • Smoke sealing around the frame perimeter

A non-rated panel — or a rated panel installed incorrectly — immediately voids compliance.

Ceasefire PFP’s Approach

Ceasefire supplies and installs tested and approved fire-rated access panels. Our installers:

  • Select the correct FRL for the barrier
  • Use approved fixings and sealants
  • Apply smoke seals where required
  • Record each installation (photos + batch numbers) in the Passive Fire Register

Common Issues We Encounter

  • Standard access panels installed in rated walls
  • Oversized openings that exceed the tested dimensions
  • Frames not fully sealed
  • Rated panels replaced with non-rated versions during maintenance

In summary: Fire-rated access panels allow safe service access without compromising fire compartmentation. By using tested products and following AS 4072.1 installation requirements, Ceasefire PFP ensures both accessibility and compliance on every project.
